Advantages of Catamaran Boat
Level sailing gives greater comfort and is less tiring
Cruising catamarans heel only 5 to 10 degrees under sail as compared to 30 to 45 for the average keel ballasted boat. The comfort that results from this level sailing is felt many ways.
Being able to dry out
If your catamaran has mini-keels or is built to dry out (retractable rudders and reinforced hull bottoms), then you have still more anchorage options.
No rolling in an anchorage
We have found this a very valuable yet seldom talked about benefit, as we can drop the hook in anchorage s which are not usable by monohulls because of the wave and swell action or the wake of passing boats.
Cruise in shallow water
Because catamarans have a shallow draft (how much water they need to float in) you can go and cruise and anchor in areas that monohulls can’t get into. The draft on catamaran varies from 1 to 4 feet depending on whether it has mini-keels or dagger boards and the size of the cat.
View from bridge deck cabin
Another great advantage is the great 360 degree view you have from most catamaran bridge decks. In the average sailboat you are down below, the port holes are at standing eye level or higher.
Lots of Space
Because of the large wide deck areas there is a real feeling of space when outside on a cat, from the wide cockpit where you can set up a deck chair or hammock to the bow nets.
Privacy
On our boat with its separate hulls from the bridge deck cabin (click here for the layout of our cat, Light Wave) we almost have three boats in one. Even on cats with the hulls joined to the bridgedeck there is lot of privacy as the accommodation is spread out over a very wide space.
Safety: catamarans don’t sink, you aren’t thrown overboard
There are many safety advantages to a catamaran. As mentioned above under level sailing, there is less fatigue which allows you to make better decisions.
Hulls: As we have already said, the catamaran has two parallel hulls that are in contact with the water and give it that stability.
Deck: The deck is the upper part that connects the two hulls thanks to the Crossbeam, which is a crossbar where the two hulls are joined.
Mast: Although nowadays, many catamarans are motorised, the mast is a vital part of the boat, as it is the main mast where the sails go.
Mainsail: This is the main sail that will be mounted on the mast and will provide most of the catamaran’s propulsion.
Rudders: Like all boats, the rudders are used to control the direction of the catamaran. They are located at the back of the hull.
Boom: This is a secondary mast which is connected to the mast and which guides and supports the mainsail.
Stern stay: These are the cables that hold the mast at the back to keep it in position.
Forestay: These are the cables that attach to the mast at the front of the catamaran and also hold the mast in position.
Sheeting: These are the ropes that are used to control all the sails.

How to Sail a Sailing Catamaran Boat
Pre-preparation
Before setting sail, check safety equipment, wind conditions and make sure the sails and rudder are in good condition.
Hoisting the sails
Once on the water, hoist the main sails and adjust their tension according to the wind direction.
Rudder control
Use the rudder to maintain the desired course. Unlike monohull sailboats, catamarans respond more quickly to changes in direction.
Weight distribution
It is crucial to keep the weight balanced between the two hulls to ensure stability.
Tacking and gybing
Learn how to change the direction of the catamaran by moving the sails correctly to avoid unnecessary stress.
Maintenance Tips for Your Catamaran Boat
Regular Inspections and Cleaning
First and foremost, be sure to inspect your catamaran regularly, including the engine, electrical components, and plumbing. You should also clean your catamaran frequently to prevent the buildup of dirt, salt, and marine organisms that could damage the hull and deck.
Engine Maintenance
Before each voyage with your catamaran, always give the engine a quick maintenance check. Check the engine oil, transmission fluid, belts and hoses, coolant level, and raw water system to make sure everything is in good working order. Remember to change the oil on schedule.
Hull and Bottom Maintenance
Your catamaran will need bottom cleaning and repainting approximately once a year, depending on the frequency of use. This process involves lifting the catamaran out of the water, removing the old paint, cleaning the hull, and repairing any scratches or dents. Once the bottom is clean and free of imperfections, apply primer and an anti-fouling paint, then polish the surface.
Deck and Interior
Maintain the deck and interior of your catamaran by cleaning or replacing the upholstery and carpets as needed, and cleaning and polishing the woodwork. This not only keeps your catamaran comfortable and aesthetically pleasing but also preserves its resale value.
